Area Motels The following motels accept dogs. Please double-check with them when you call, to be absolutely sure. I have tried to indicate the "important" amenities, such as airing facilities and proximity to highways. Please ask at each motel for best directions to Winterville. Most of the following have a dog-in-room surcharge. Best Western - Athens - 706-546-7311 Downtown location, very little grass for airing. Parking in front of your door. Bulldog Inn - Athens - 706-543-3611 Family owned and operated. Lots of grass for airing, set on a highway, with lots of room behind the motel to walk dogs. Nothing fancy, and some have complained of being disturbed at night by activity, but very welcoming to dogs, and reasonable rates. Holiday Inn Express - Athens - 706-546-8122 Downtown location, dogs only allowed in poolside (?!?) rooms. Some grass, but rates are high, starting at $75.00/night. Campus Inn - Athens - 706-549-0251 Near to the mall, so lots of traffic, some grass. Easy to get to and from the loop/bypass. Dogs are very welcome here, and rates are very reasonable, HOWEVER, there have been some problems with cleanliness and being bothered by other guests. Microtel Inn - Athens - (706) 548-5676 Lots of grass, and convenient to a major road, but set back enough to be very safe. Dogs are OK, but in only a limited number of rooms. A complete list of Athens dog-friendly hotels/motels can be found here: http://athensdog.com/hotels.html. The Athens Dog site also has great links/information on dog-friendly activities in the area. The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce can give you information on local activities, motels, etc. too. During football season, and around graduation time, motel rooms are at a premium. Search the University of Georgia's social calendar (enter the dates you plan to arrive in Athens and you will get a calendar of events, including all home Bulldog games for those dates) for a very useful idea of whether to expect congestion in the downtown/campus areas. Athens is a college town, so there are a lot of restaurants, ranging from gourmet to fast food. Historic antebellum homes can be found all around the downtown area, and about 30 minutes south in historic Madison, GA. Atlanta is about an hour’s drive away, and features sightseeing such as the CNN studios, Coca Cola bottling plant and Zoo Atlanta, which has just gotten 2 pandas on loan from China. Of interest too is the Bass Pro Shops store, (located on I-85 just north of Atlanta), which is a huge sporting goods store, selling lots of outdoor gear. |
